Abeka Video Program Review

I often am asked by other homeschoolers about what curriculum we use, which leads to inquiries about the Abeka Video Program.  Abeka is based out of Pensacola, Florida and has been around for many decades, designed originally for Christian school use.  It has evolved over the years as a popular homeschooler’s choice as it is pre-packaged and fairly user friendly.

{A side note:  I actually used the Abeka curriculum from 4th-12th grades when I attended a Christian school.  So, I’ve been familiar with Abeka since 1979!}

If you’re familiar with our homeschool journey, you already know that we’ve been at this for nearly twenty years with two graduates and one in the not-so-distant future, by God’s amazing grace.  We have primarily used the Abeka curriculum for most of our journey and relied on the Video Program for the last five years.  I especially recommend it for the high school years!  We did use the Video Program for Algebra I for our oldest back in 2003.  So, my kids have had a variety of teachers in a myriad of subjects, some we love almost like family.

Hands down, Mr. Mike Smith, who has taught History and Bible is the funniest and most thoroughly engaging teacher they’ve ever had!  I’ve even enjoyed listening to him.  A close second, in terms of a wealth of information that he brings to the table, is Mr. Denis McBride.  My kids loved both of these teachers dearly and learned so much from them.  They were almost sad when a course was over!  Incidentally, you can view snippets of these gifted teachers on YouTube to get a glimpse of their teaching style and expertise.

Interestingly enough, Mrs. Judy Howe, who wrote the math curriculum, is the video teacher for Algebra.  My daughter absolutely loved her teaching.  I remember one year, my daughter was immersed in poetry and really developed a passion for it because of the way it was introduced to her via her Abeka Video Teacher.

My children have certainly learned a lot from me, or at least I’d like to think that, however, exposing them to so many experts in their respective fields has broadened their horizons in ways that would’ve been impossible otherwise.  So, I am forever grateful for the Abeka Video experience!

One year we did the video streaming online, which is not a live experience, but pre-recorded.  It is slightly cheaper and foregoes having the actual DVD’s mailed out.  You simply access it via Abeka’s website.  However, we found that selecting the DVD option worked better for us.  (less temptation to view other websites…)

The format of the Video Program is a classroom setting at the Pensacola Christian Academy and seeks to engage the student at home.  The teacher often asks questions of those in the classroom as well as directing questions to the “student at home watching”.  They play games that test their working knowledge of the subject that break up the pace of simply lecturing.

Included in the cost of the Video Program are all of the necessary student workbooks, teacher keys and tests.  So it is a complete program.  It is a little expensive, however, you are really getting a quality education that is priceless.

While the textbooks offer a very thorough education through a Christian perspective, adding the Video teacher’s expertise, further enhances the learning experience.

One can opt to only purchase one subject or a complete grade level.  At present, my son is completing 10th grade.

The way it works is … At the beginning of the school year, Abeka mails out the first set of DVD’s and a few months later, they ship the second batch of DVD’s.  However, they will not ship the third (and final) batch until you have returned the first set.  You are only permitted to have two sets out at any given time.  The DVD’s remain the intellectual property of Abeka and are never to be duplicated or retained in any way by the student.  The consumer is simply “leasing” the DVD’s for the school year.  You have to return all DVD’s within 12 months of your school start date.  When you place your order, you submit whatever “start date” you desire and this is what they go by.

You simply print a return shipping label from their website using your account and drop off at the Post Office.  They are very prompt about sending out the next set.  Their customer service is excellent in all regards.  We’ve had times where we’ve had to call about things and they are quick to resolve any issue, no questions.  As a parent, I’ve been ordering from Abeka since 1997 and am a completely satisfied customer.

Homeschooling Forever?

Has our homeschooling journey been that long?  No, not really, but it sure has seemed that way some days.  Way back in 1997 when our daughter was a baby, we decided to homeschool our oldest.  We really didn’t know much about the process aside from what I’d read in a handful of library books.  There were two homeschooling families at our church and I picked their brains for what worked for them.  It still was a walk in the dark and every step was preceded by much prayer, thought and hard work.

We have had many days it truly felt like we were stumbling around in the dark, stubbing our toes on the furniture.  Other days were filled with euphoric moments of triumph when new concepts were mastered!  I think most homeschoolers would agree that their experiences has been a combined mixture of both.

Where are we now?

Our older son was in fifth grade when we began this journey and he graduated in 2006.  Ten years ago?  How can that be?  Time truly flies, folks!

Our daughter wanted to do school like her big brother so she began kindergarten at age four. She’s always been very curious and precocious and we felt she was ready.  She graduated in May 2015.

Our younger son is currently finishing up 10th grade and will begin 11th grade in the fall.  He’s almost 6′ tall and we have a lot of fun learning together.  We use the Abeka video program, which I absolutely love!  All of the video teachers have a wealth of knowledge and experience, which make it worth every penny.  We use a separate curriculum for math, though.  That’s the beauty of homeschooling – you can tailor it to your child’s needs depending on their strengths and weaknesses.

I always say, “One of these days I’m going to graduate!”  🙂  The truth is, I’ve been in nearly every grade four times (once myself way back when and then once for each of the 3 kids).

We’ve had many bumps in the road along the way.  We’ve moved quite a bit over the years, which always throws a wrench into schooling preparation and plans.  Also, I just had surgery.  It’s times like these I’m very thankful for the Abeka video program and the fact that my son is older and can work independently for the most part.  We do work pretty closely with math, however.

Life is always full of interruptions and that is why we have always appreciated the immense flexibility of homeschooling.  For instance, we are not bound by school schedules that prevent us from taking a family vacation if desired.  There are so many opportunities my children would never have had if it weren’t for a home based education.

Has it been easy?  A resounding NO!  But then, nothing worthwhile in life ever is.

Has it been fun?  Yes.  We’ve had many laughs … mixed with tears sometimes.  Mixed with worry that our children aren’t learning enough…or fast enough…or on par with their public school peers… It’s times like these, our kids do something really amazing or we have lengthy conversations that allay all my fears that they will, in fact, turn out just fine.

Has it been worth it?  Every minute.  Every ounce of energy.  Only eternity will tell, but I know that in my heart of hearts, I’ve given it my all.

{Side note:  My 18 year old daughter & I had a conversation about the stresses of raising kids, family size, etc.  I shared how important extended family can be, especially relieving strain when the children are small.  Our conversation went on and she said, “Mom, I have many fond memories of you doing crafts with us and always making things fun.  You’ve done a great job.”}

Well, I guess I should frame this, not that she hasn’t said similar things before, because she has.  She’s always so sweet and affirming.  But, because sometimes those “Mommy fears” rear their ugly head and needle away at any confidence I may have had.

Moms have such a full and far reaching job on their hands, raising a family, taking care of the house, their husband, and whatever involvement they may have in church or the community!  Goodness, we need to give ourselves a break!

You’re doing GREAT, Moms!!

Frame this!  “You’re doing GREAT!”  You really are.

If your hearts’ desire is to be the best Mom possible, I’m confident that you are, in fact, doing just that.  We need to give ourselves grace.  And don’t worry so much!  We worry because we love deeply but really we should transfer that worry into a prayer and leave it there.  I’m preaching to the choir now.

It’s hard to imagine life beyond homeschooling but in May 2018, our youngest will graduate.  And then a new chapter of my life will begin.  But this one has been an exceptional run and one that has been rich, meaningful and a real time of planting seeds into our children.  For that, I am ever grateful.

And to those who are just starting out on this homeschooling journey or are midway through – Hang in there!  Enjoy every step of the way.  Do those crazy art projects and science experiments.  Go on those educational field trips and family vacations.  Find beauty and learning opportunities everywhere!  Enjoy your kids, moms.  Those formative years only last so long and then they’ll be taller than you (like all my kids are now!).

I saw this quote many years ago:

“A parent’s true role is to work themselves out of a job.”

Our job is to raise the next generation to be moral, independent, critical thinkers.  If we have done that, our work is done.

Of course, as a Christian Mom, I have prayed for my children since they were in my womb and I will always intercede for them until I draw my last breath.  I love them so.  So, even when our children are out on their own making their way in this world, our role as intercessors never ends.

American Excess & Balance

I’ve often contemplated this seeming disease that plagues us.  I love to organize and clean things and have since I was a kid.  Definitely a “Type A” here.  Just for fun, I enjoy watching YouTube videos on organizing or cleaning, and I’m amazed by the glutton of household items average people possess!

I will preface any further observations and opinions by saying – we have moved many times in our twenty year marriage, which forces evaluation of one’s “stuff”.  That said, after our recent move back to sunny Florida a year ago, it was incredible the stuff I’d deemed so valuable that we paid money to move it 1,000 miles.  Since our move and settling into our home, we have had Salvation Army come out twice with their big truck to haul away many boxes, Christmas train sets, set it and forget rotisserie oven, faux ficus trees, brick-a-brack, clothing, china, etc.  In addition to that, we’ve taken bag after bag to Goodwill almost weekly for the past year as we continue to sort through boxes.  Incredible the volume one collects over the years!

So, I’ve been forced to handle every item and evaluate.  I can only imagine the challenge for those who’ve lived in the same house for twenty plus years and how quickly things can get out of control.  Tastes in decor and furnishings change, fads come and go, the kids outgrow toys and clothes, hobbies move on, etc.  And if you have an issue with excessive shopping, especially as a means of therapy; well, then, all bets are off!

What is one to do when our “stuff” overwhelms us?

I think it’s easy to become completely overwhelmed if the chaos fills your entire home.  I would strongly suggest enlisting the help of a good friend or family member who can help you evaluate things and offer perspective.

When sorting through a room/box/dresser, I always ask myself three questions:

1.) Have I used it in the last year?

2.) Am I currently using it?

3.) Will I likely use it in the next year?

The task of letting things go can be so difficult.  Even a “Type A” like myself has found it hard putting some items in the donation box because it may have sentimental value or because it once cost a good bit of money.  The consequence of holding onto these items that we are no longer using and serve no purpose is that they seem to multiply and therefore occupy mental space as well.  They bog us down and we are hindered from letting our creative juices flow and general happiness from a tidy room.  They are “non-value added items”.  Now, I am not suggesting in any way, getting rid of all sentimental things or counting your household goods, etc.  But, I am offering a method to consider applying to our excess, which seems to be an epidemic.

I recently read a statistic that said 10% of Americans rent a storage unit outside their home!  Wow!  That’s staggering and in my humble opinion, a huge waste of money.  If we do not have room to house said item, then maybe we don’t need it.  I understand there are causes for short term leasing, such as military personnel, etc.  But, we’re talking long term here.  Why do we have so much stuff?

I often tell my kids that when I was their age, we didn’t have Walmart to run to for whatever item we thought we needed at that split second. There were grocery stores, hardware stores, department stores, etc.  And things were pretty expensive so we did not often get new things outside of Christmas, birthdays and the beginning of a new school year.  This must be a foreign concept to them as now we even have the all-too-tempting Amazon and internet shopping in general.

The stuff is so entirely accessible.  Add to that the “in your face” marketing that envelopes our society and there seems to be no escape!

On the flip side of consumerism, we have this new trend of minimalism.  Interesting.  While I think there are merits to this idea, I personally do not think it is for me.  But, I do wholeheartedly agree with keeping our “stuff” to a minimum but in a more balanced way.  For instance, I don’t feel like our family needs seven bottles of shampoo and conditioner, nor do I feel the need to count our toiletries.  I don’t believe we need three sets of everyday dishes, nor do I feel like we should count our plates and bowls.  To every area of life, there should be balance.  So how do we achieve this balance with our stuff?

I would say that we have to nip it in the bud.  Deeply evaluate items before we purchase them.  Do I really need this?  Do I already have something that could work just as well? Do I need “another” one?  Will it add value to my life?

It seems that once an item enters our homes, it takes up permanent residence and eventually reaches the point of excess.  I like the “one in – one out” idea.  If you purchase one item.  You put one in the donation box.  Simple idea but effective.

And now to address our current glut of stuff…

I love the old adage – “How do we eat an elephant?”

One bite at a time, right?

That is my suggestion in this regard as well.  Forget that the entire house may look like a tornado came through last night.  Forget that it’s been years since you’ve done anything with the basement or storage room.  Forget the cobwebs, the dust bunnies, the space invaders that have taken over your house!  Forget them all.

Today is a new day, my friend!

Writing things down has always proven effective for me when tackling tasks, especially undesirable tasks.  Make a list.

I would start your war plan with the rooms your family utilizes the most frequently.  This would be the kitchen, the family room, the living room, etc.

Outline the major tasks that require attention in each room.  Checking tasks off a list yields tremendous satisfaction and is very rewarding.  It propels us naturally to the next item.

Enlist the help of all the troops!  Even the smallest of soldiers can lend a hand.

One of the most common reasons for accumulation of things is that they do not have a home … OR … the soldiers did not take the extra steps necessary to take said item to its trusty home.

“A place for everything and everything in its place.”

Taking a room by room approach will inspire you to continue your war path to the other affected areas.  It doesn’t matter how long this takes.  The point is that progress is being made.

“Begun is half done.”

I think the greatest purging/organizing/cleaning tool is your attitude, frankly.

“Attitude determines altitude.”

If you have a sloppy, couldn’t care less attitude, then your home will reflect that.  If you are disciplined and focused, your home will reflect that also.

“Input yields output.”

Put on some happy music.  Whatever that is to you.  Sometimes I prefer classical, sometimes contemporary Christian music, sometimes easy listening.  Depends on my mood, I guess.  Whatever will inspire you and bring happy feelings, put it on.  Music has an amazing ability to carry us away from our present tasks (mundane as they may be) and take us to a joyful place in our soul.

Give yourself a pat on the back during each step of your progress.  You deserve it.  As long as your feet keep moving in a positive direction, you are one step closer to the environment that you desire.

Just think of the joy you could bring to someone less fortunate as you place unwanted items in the donation box.  And, next time you feel the urge to place that Amazon order or hit the mall, ask yourself, “Do I really need this?”

Sorting & Organizing Ideas

Salvation Army donations

As I’ve been unpacking and sorting boxes, I have come to realize that I hold onto things far beyond their usefulness.  My mother grew up in the years following the Great Depression and was certainly trained to reuse things and not to waste anything.  This translated in saving YEARS worth of magazines that ‘One Day’ she would reread.  That day never came.  And now, I wonder if I don’t have some of the same ‘Great Depression’ tendencies, on a much smaller scale albeit.  So, I question the usefulness of each item as I unpack and try to find new homes for things as we settle into our new house.  I, too, detest wasting anything that still has life remaining.  We are consistent contributors to Salvation Army and Goodwill, for sure.  I always have a current box of donation items waiting in the wings until it is full enough to drop off.

These are the questions I must continually ask myself –

“Is this currently serving a purpose in my home?”

“Will I likely use it in the next year?”

“Could someone else use this more often than I do?”

“Would I miss it if it were gone?”

Last December we moved 1,000 miles so I am very familiar with having to make these tough choices.  And sometimes they are difficult because we cling to our possessions so tightly, it seems.  I’ve grilled myself as to why this is lately and have only come up with the notion that I love deeply, but perhaps that love and affection is often misplaced on things or memories.

Take, for instance, a recent sorting of cards, letters and kids’ artwork … Some of the cards and letters are so special to me, especially since some of the senders have passed on.  Those will be placed in the scrapbook, however, some of the senders I had to pause even to recall WHO they were!  But, I saved every card from select years apparently.  Fortunately, most I tossed.

I have a solution to coral all these fond memories.  I am making a scrapbook for each child that will contain all of their precious artwork.  This way, we can look back on their treasures easily, instead of them getting buried in an old file, where no one will see them.  (Eventually, these albums will be theirs to keep.)

I’m making scrapbooks for old letters and cards as well.  For years I have struggled with what to do with these sentimental artifacts, so I am very excited about getting these organized in a format we all can enjoy!  As I sat on the floor rereading old letters I sent to my husband over a decade ago, I realized what treasures these will be to look back on.  They were personal, of course, but yield a glimpse of the stage our relationship was in at the time and document our deep and enduring love for one another.  Those are the treasures to keep!  I think our children will even enjoy reading them after we’re gone.

Some decisions as we sift and sort are easy ones to make!  (such as the iridescent marbles I saved in a gallon size ziploc!)  That’s an easy one!  I don’t need them.  In fact, those may be the very marbles I am losing on a daily basis!  Maybe it’s time to donate those to charity!  Haha!  As much as we have parted with over the last year in preparation for our move and then facing the harsh reality that not nearly everything we thought would fit in our 26 foot Uhaul with a trailer attached!  We left a lot behind with our neighbor!  (Bow Flex, antique table, and the list is nearly endless)  In the end, there is not a single item that I can say we miss!  As painful as the process of organizing may be, the end result will be far more rewarding!

The above picture is not even all of what we’ve donated post-move!  I counted 25 boxes for the first home pick up and this was the second pick up, which also included an artificial tree and two toy Christmas trains.  (My younger two are 16 and 17.)  The Salvation Army worker asked if the trains were operational.  To which I acknowledged they were.  He smiled and said, “Oh, wow, these are going to make some children very happy!”  🙂  The satisfaction in knowing that something that would have been collecting dust in our storage room would provide enjoyment to others is very rewarding.

I can think more clearly without clutter.  As a full time homemaker, fewer items in our house means less work for me to keep up with those things!  Please do not think we are minimalists because we are far from that.  My ‘Girl Scout mentality’ (Be prepared!) does not allow for sparse living.  However, I am quick to toss items in the donation box if I have no use for them.

The flip side to organizing is being extremely selective about what we bring into our home!  I have been asking myself ‘Do I really need this?  Where will I use it?’ more and more.  And then most times I find myself placing it back on the store shelf.  Just because it’s cute or may be useful does not mean it needs to come home with you.  That is a lesson for us all.  Americans are great consumers, but maybe we should consume a little less.

For some reason, my husband and son love bringing home fliers, business cards, little newspapers.  This is needless clutter!  Unless you’re actually going to use this information, don’t let it stay.  And certainly, don’t allow it to accumulate in piles around the house.  This is why I open the mail over top of the trash can.  I toss or shred it and only keep what I must.  Paper clutter multiplies while we’re sleeping.  We must be watchful and vigilant!  🙂

Before & After ~ House Transformation

Isn’t it amazing what a little (or a lot) of paint will do?  We purchased this house in April and have been doing major renovations ever since.  The painters just finished with the exterior last week and we absolutely love the transformation!!  The color before was a very tired and dull blue/gray, which we think did the house a disservice.  We chose: Behr Palomino Tan as the body color, Safari Brown as the accent color, Classic Taupe for window trim, Espresso for front steps and Allure (dark red) for front door.  The painters color matched our sample selections with Sherwin Williams’ “Resilience” paint.

The color palette we chose resembles some we saw in a Ralph Lauren paint brochure.  We think it suits the house well and was a much needed face lift.

We also had the painters spray fifty corbels in Espresso and my husband will install them under the soffits in sets of two several feet apart.  I’ll have to take a picture of them now that they’ve been painted.  They look so good!  They’re a neat architectural accent and will add a lot of interest to the front of the house.  (By the way, if you’re ever interested in any type of architectural trim/molding/accents, Architecturaldepot.com is worth checking out.  They were just under $9 each whereas Home Depot sells them for $25 each!  Huge savings!

Our house is definitely not your typical Florida style home, but that’s what makes it so refreshingly unique.  In subsequent posts, I will share some of the distinct features of our house and other renovations we’ve done. You’ll be able to see just how very “one of a kind” it is.

What normally would have taken the painters one week to finish, wound up taking a month just about to complete due to the unusual rain pattern we’ve had!  June 1st through November 30 is Florida’s typical hurricane season with daily rains around 4p.m.  However, the pattern we’ve been experiencing has been intermittent torrential downpours throughout the day that seem to come out of no where!  Very unpredictable.  We are thrilled at the job they did and especially the transformation of our formerly pink steps!  Yes, you read that right.  They were 80’s pink tile and a poor welcome to visitors in 2015.  So, we are very pleased with the Espresso facelift.  It just adds such a rich and welcoming tone.  And, to think, painting the front steps were kind of an afterthought.  It was worth every dime.  🙂  They were an afterthought because initially we planned to replace them (eventually at least).  But, the more we considered our options, we arrived at the brilliant (if we do say so ourselves! Haha!) decision of painting them!

They also painted our pool deck and back patio, which really refreshed the back of the house!  (Sorry I don’t have a better shot, but you’ll just have to take my word for it.  Haha)

We are so grateful to God for blessing us with this house and plan to enjoy it for many years.  We lived in Florida before for nearly eleven years, moved back up north for five years and now, are back home!  We’re ecstatic to live close to our grown son once again.  We just celebrated his birthday for the first time in person in five years!  It was extra special, needless to say!  Things are nice, but they’re just “things”.  There is no price tag on family relationships and the friendships God blesses us with!

I hope you enjoy seeing our renovation pictures and coming along for the ride during our house transformation!  We did most of the demolition work ourselves to save some money but hired contractors to do the majority of the renovations.  The kids and I painted the entire interior (3,400 square feet) prior to moving in!  And most of it was done in 90+ degree weather with no A/C.  (One of our A/C units decided to give up the ghost shortly after we closed on the house.)  Somehow, we managed.  We replaced that unit right before we moved in, which was an expense we did not anticipate right away.  We had to wait until some of the work (like sanding textured ceilings and spraying texture on the walls) was completed before we could replace it.  We’ve worked really hard and are slowly, but surely making it our own.

Renovations Continue

We purchased a home in mid April knowing we’d have to invest blood, sweat and tears … and lots of dough.  However, it is so true about renovations taking longer than anticipated and costing more than imagined!  We keep telling ourselves that we are in the home stretch, meanwhile someone keeps moving home base!  😉

Our house was built in 1988 and was in desperate need of updating and replacing most major systems.  The house has two A/C units and one crashed a couple months ago.  That was Expense #1 that was unanticipated so early on.  Then the well equipment was in dire need of replacing, so we did that.

We’ve completely gutted three bathrooms and the kitchen, as well as tiled the entire lower level of the house, kitchen, laundry room and bathrooms.  We did the majority of the demolition work ourselves, however hired a contractor to do the rest.  So far, the master and powder baths are nearly completed.  Soon the contractor will return to finish the downstairs bathroom, which will be for the kids.  As it stands now, we share the master bath.  *Sigh*  I will be posting before and after pictures in subsequent blogs so you can see the complete transformations.  I’ll detail all the work we’ve done as well.

We painted the entire 3,400 square feet of interior space ourselves, most of it done prior to moving in, which was a blessing!  We painted most of the interior antique white, however, my sewing/craft room and my husband’s office are both painted in sage green, which is such a peaceful color!  We hired professional painters to transform the exterior, which was a very tired gray blue color.  What a transformation it is too!  The body is called palomino tan with dark red front doors.  It turned out even better than anticipated!  Praise the Lord!!  What we thought would be a week long painting process has turned into Week 4 now due to all the rain we’ve gotten!  The painters were frustrated and so were we that it dragged on so long, but only God controls the weather.  So, we just roll with it.  🙂  (pardon the pun)  haha  We actually seriously considered painting the exterior ourselves initially, however the high pitch of the A frame roof was just too great!  You’ll see what I mean in future pictures.  🙂

A number of our electrical outlets were non-functioning so we hired an electrician to swap out all of the outlets and switchplates in the house to modern outlets, rockers and slide dimmer switches (versus the old round knobs).  I’ll post pictures of some of those soon too.  That has been a huge undertaking!  It sounds like such a small thing but we have more switches than you can imagine and many or, should I say most, are 3-way switches (which are expensive!).  It is a small detail to swap these out but it really does make a huge overall impact.  We’re so glad we decided to do that.

This really is a nice house.  It just needed a lot of attention.  My husband and son plan on installing wood flooring throughout the first level with the exception of the marble tile entry way and the porcelain tile in the kitchen and laundry room.  We live in Florida and there aren’t technically basements in our great state, however our house is built on a hill, so that’s why I refer to the lower level as downstairs and sometimes I even call it the basement.  (although that’s not entirely accurate)  I’m from the north, what do you expect?  haha

I’m pretty sure we will have home improvement projects lined up for the next couple years.  We give ourselves lots of “pep talks” regularly, though.  We’re going to get through this, we say.  We look at each other and remind ourselves that once these tasks are completed, they won’t need to be repeated.  Oh, we try to look at the bright side … and we really are so very blessed!  But, sometimes, like when the water supply won’t flow into the house  AGAIN … well, it’s times like those that beg the question, “Did we make the wrong choice?”  😉  In the end, I don’t think we did.  Although, I’m pretty sure we had no idea how grueling this process would become and how long it would drag on.

Literally, we have met problems/challenges/opportunities for personal growth at every turn!  Take for instance, our double wall oven situation.  The company just swapped out the old double wall oven because it arrived badly dented and brought us a new set.  We thought, “Oh good!  At least this chapter will be closed.”  No such luck.  They delivered the wrong set on Monday, which promptly heated up the newly installed set of cabinetry drawers directly below the oven.  It’s things like this that keep us on our knees and clinging to the promise that God will help us in time of need.  🙂  If you’re wondering where things stand with the oven situation, a new set will be delivered in two weeks.  We will definitely inspect the oven insulation before installation!

And the pool … well, that is another subject for another day!

Projects of late

Painted front steps last July

 

Just thought I’d make a quick post of what I’ve been up to the last couple weeks.  Of course, physical therapy remains part of our regular routine, so we work our lives around it.  The kids and I continue to go three days a week.  We definitely can see progress as it’s been five weeks now since our auto accident.  But, we’re looking forward with great anticipation to the day when we can say we are without pain!  And, so, we press on …

And now to the projects …

Our house was built in 1977, thus projects abound!  So much of our house has received cosmetic updates, however I think with an older house, projects will continue until kingdom come!

We renovated the kitchen last month and are still waiting for one last cabinet to be installed above the refrigerator.  They ordered the wrong size initially, so once that’s done, the installation will be complete.  We plan on painting at some point down the road when our shoulders and backs no longer hurt.  We want to paint a taupe color.  The sickly salmon color that adorns the walls now is awful.

In the spring, we replaced 3 of the 4 – 1977 colored toilets.  Who knew such a menial update could mean so much?!

Last week our A/C decided to flare up and had to have some maintenance and repairs done.  Thankfully, it wasn’t huge.

Over the weekend, my dear husband scraped up all the old caulk in the upstairs master bath and applied fresh caulk.  What a transformation!  Why is it that we delay such routine tasks?  I don’t know, but I like the finished product!  He also fixed my daughter’s closet door knob, which has been broken for nearly four years!  He fixed my son’s closet door knobs last month.  It’s the little things in life that mean so much!  I cannot stand things that don’t function properly, so these little things are significant!!

Dear husband and I made a “Projects To Do List” over the weekend and we plan to divide and conquer.  Some of the smaller tasks, the kids and I can handle; whereas some things only my husband can do … Such as: re-grout our bathroom tile, caulk the crown molding and repair the porch door screen.

The kids and I cleaned up the back porch and replaced the pillows (we’d stored away until post-pollen season) on the wicker furniture.  We’ve enjoyed eating dinner out there the last two nights under the ceiling fans.  Very peaceful.

Yesterday the kids and I organized the garage!  Whew, what a lot of work!  How I thank God for the kids’ help and, in particular, my son’s strong muscles and height to lift things and reach the high shelves! (My right elbow is still hurting so that limits my movement, which is challenging because I want to do so much!)  We loaded up donations for the Salvation Army, donations for a family of eight and filled a large trash can!  After playing Tetris with boxes and the garage shelves, my son used the blower to clean out the garage floor.  I watched this YouTube video on applying an epoxy coating to the garage floor and was so tempted to do that here!  Dear husband and I have talked about it in years’ past, but one day we might just do it …  It would be so much easier to keep clean, thus minimizing dirt and dust getting tracked in the house.  There are definite benefits.  That’s one idea for the back burner…

We have this huge outdoor Rubbermaid bin that was completely filled with balls of every sport, most of which the kids no longer play with.  So, we filled a large black trash bag last Friday with an assortment of balls and outdoor toys and donated to another large family we’re good friends with.  Their kids were overjoyed!  That makes cleaning up so worth it right there!  My son even gave them a couple Nerf dart guns he doesn’t need.  Happiness all around!

While Operation Organize Garage is complete for now, there is further room for improvement.  Phase II will be in progress soon…

Today’s mission is to spray weed killer and power wash the front porch and brick paver sidewalk.  The back patio will be for another day.  I painted the front steps last July so I think power washing them will brighten them up a bit.  They were a drab color before we moved in and I painted them a taupe color, which looks really nice.  The two pots of red geraniums on either side of the front steps are thriving nicely.  They must be hearty!  I haven’t killed them yet!  😉

Does anyone else have four, large artificial trees in their home?  We have three Ficus and one banana tree!  That’s a lot to contend with!  They’re spread out in different rooms but dusting them seems to be a task I’d rather postpone.  That’s one of our next projects…to take them outside and dust thoroughly!  Dusting the blinds in each room is also on our list… Oh, how I do not like to dust!  Haha!  Divide and conquer …

Speaking of which, I better get to conquering!
