Peace in the Midst of the Storm

220

Did you know that it is possible to have peace in the midst of the storm?

Psalm 23 has been a consistent “go to” comforting passage for me over the years and still has an unparalleled capacity to calm my deepest fears and quiet my restless soul.

It starts out – “The Lord is my Shepherd.”  Is He your shepherd today, friend?  Ah, what peace floods my soul to know that God not only comforts me, but guides me.  After all, that’s the role of a shepherd.

Verse 2 says, ” He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:  He leadeth me beside the still waters.”

What a tranquil visual that verse contains!  It’s as if God is saying, “Come, quiet your anxious soul.  Rest a while.”

I’m reminded of the New Testament verse that says:

“Take my yoke upon you for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  ~ Matthew 11:29

Verse 4 says, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

If you find yourself in a storm today, I encourage you to read Psalm 23 and really absorb each verse, line by line.  There is rest for your weary soul and nourishment for your thirsty spirit.  God is the Friend, who sticks closer than a brother.  (Proverbs 18:24)

God holds all power in His hands and He is able to calm your storm today.  And should He choose not to calm the seas in your life, He promises to sustain you each step along the way.  Many times we do not understand God’s timing and His ways but we are not called to understand.  We are called to trust and obey instead.

When the storm clouds rage, I challenge you to focus on the One who holds the storm in His safe and loving hands.  Focus on His power and not the power of the clouds that produce rain.  Their power is limited.  That is all they can produce.  God’s power, however, is limitless and knows no bounds.  It is His hands I am choosing to cling to in the storm.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”  ~  Psalm 23:6

He Directs My Steps

278

The book of Psalms is probably my favorite book of the Bible.  It not only lifts my spirits, but it also is replete with wisdom.

“The Lord directs the steps of the godly.  He delights in every detail of their lives.  Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.

Once I was young, and now I am old.  Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread.”  ~ Psalm 37:23-25

Don’t you just love this passage?  What a comfort to know that the great God of the universe directs my steps and is interested in even the minute details of my life!  Wow!  That is an amazing thought, isn’t it?  I was just pondering the thought (as if my finite mind can even truly understand this) the other day of God’s care for me, but not only me, the entire state, even the whole U.S. and especially the whole world!  My limited mindset cannot fathom how God does this, but that doesn’t make it any less true!  Somehow (because He’s God!) He can help me in my day to day life, along with seven billion others!

The Lord not only cares for me and directs my paths, but He also provides for every need.  Yes, He is truly an amazing God!  I often reflect on the passage found in Matthew chapter 6 of how if God can take care of the little birds, how much more is He able to care for me, one of His children?  That is a humbling and reassuring thought.

I just want to take a moment and thank God for the Majesty of Who He is, for His provision and direction in my life and for His love.  He is worthy of all our praise!

“The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.” ~ Psalm 103:8

God is Our Refuge

597

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.

 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.

 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” ~ Psalm 46:1-5

He is Jehovah Nissi, our Banner.  He watches over us, protects us and shields us from life’s storms.  And the times we must endure the storms, He is the lighthouse to guide us safely to harbor.

Love this verse:

“This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.” ~ Psalm 91:2

We can run to God in times of trouble and find safety for our weary souls and renewed strength for the journey.  Turn to God and pour your heart out to Him today, friend.  He won’t disappoint.  He is that friend that sticks closer than a brother, a refuge from the storms.  The Christian life is not without trials, but life is far easier to navigate holding God’s hands as He illuminates our paths! He will never leave us or forsake us.  The seas of life may roar, but we never sail alone.

“The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.” ~ Psalm 18:2

In Everything Give Thanks

Do you feel as though some pieces of the puzzle of life are out of place?  Like you need more?  Have the storms of life been battering at your vessel?

“In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” ~ I Thessalonians 5:18

Sounds simpler than applying it actually is.  Even through the storms of life, we can choose to focus on God and thank Him for the many blessings in our lives despite circumstances being less than perfect.  It’s a matter of perspective.

Do we keep our eyes on the things beyond our reach or do we focus on the infinite ways God has already blessed us?  On the possibilities of faith?

I am convinced not every blessing is tangible.  It cannot be held in your hand or touched or felt, but it’s there.  For instance, I know God has protected me countless times from car accidents in our busy area.  Many close calls, but, thankfully, we have been shielded.  Just yesterday, I was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and the black sedan behind me didn’t allow sufficient time to brake.  I looked in my rear view mirror in time to see he had slammed on his brakes so much that his brakes were smoking!  I was just thankful that he didn’t hit me because he was coming at a fairly fast speed!  God’s hand was surely with me and I thank Him for His protection every day!!

God blesses our family all the time.  He gives my husband the wisdom, knowledge and expertise to perform his job to the best of his ability.  Proverbs 13:4 says, “Those who work hard will prosper.”  God is so faithful to us.

Beyond the countless blessings God has bestowed on us, we are instructed to praise Him just for Who He is.

“Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth!  Worship the Lord with gladness.  Come before Him, singing with joy.  Acknowledge that the Lord is God!  He made us and we are His.  We are His people, the sheep of His pasture.  Enter His gates with thanksgiving, go into His courts with praise.  Give thanks to Him and praise His name.  For the Lord is good.  His unfailing love continues forever and His faithfulness continues to each generation.”  ~  Psalm 100 NLT

We can never thank God enough for what He has done, but we can certainly try!  Our time on this earth is merely warm up for heaven.  For it is there we will worship the King of Kings and Lord of Lords in all of His majesty!

“And they lay their crowns before the throne and say, ” You are worthy, O Lord our God to receive glory and honor and power.  For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased.”  ~  Revelation 4:11

“Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse standing there.  Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war.  His eyes were like flames of fire and on His head were many crowns.  A name was written on Him that no one understood except Himself.  He wore a robe dipped in blood, and His title was the Word of God.”  ~ Revelation 19:11-13

The Creator of the Universe, the Almighty God and Everlasting Father is so infinitely worthy of our praise!  He is looking for those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24)  He is so deserving of our adoration.

If praising God is a challenge for you or you don’t know where to begin, may I suggest reading through the Psalms and making them your offering of praise?  Before long, you’ll personalize your offerings of thanksgiving and worship.  God is not like man, He is not interested in flowery words.  He looks at the heart, the intents and purposes of man.  Won’t you spend a few moments worshipping Him today?

“I will praise the Lord at all times.
I will constantly speak his praises.
I will boast only in the Lord;
let all who are helpless take heart.
Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness;
let us exalt his name together.”  ~ Psalm 34:1-3
